IRRAWADY DOLPHIN

[Go back]
This dolphin's appearance is very cute. It has a large melon and a blunt, rounded head. This makes it cute as it will have one of those cartoon faces. I am sure you will like it when you see it! The fin is short, blunt and triangular. It is located about two-thirds of the way along the back. The flippers are long and broad. It is lightly coloured all over - slightly whiter on the underside than the back. When it is fully grown (adult), it will be around one to 2.3 m long at maturity and when it is first born, it will weigh around 10 kg. When it is fully grown, it will exceed 130 kg. That is a tot isn't it? This is because it needs to grow so that it can catch more food for its young. The life of an Irrawady dolphin is very short and is only 30 years there about.

The Irrawady dolphin is very relaxed and usually swims slowly. It surfaces in a rolling fashion and lifts its tail fluke clear of the water for a deep dive only. If you have an Irrawady dolphin in your national zoo, you may see it spit streams of water from its mouth whole spyhopping. Spyhopping is something that many dolphins do. They will peek out their heads to see the outside surrounding just like us treading water.

Do you know who found this special dolphin? It was Sir Richard Owen. Surprisingly, many people think that the Irrawady dolphin is a river dolphin, but in fact, it is an oceanic dolphin. There is this misconception as it is usually seen in the rivers. They actually go to the rivers as it lives near the coasts.

There is a still hope for these dolphins although they are endangered.
