The commerson dolphin feeds on krill, cuttlefish, shrimps, squid and small
fishes. It can live for about 15 to 18 years. It changes from brown or
grey to black and white when it grows older. Commerson dolphin are caught and killed in fishing nets throughout part of their range especially of the coast of Argentina. In the past, local fishermen caught these dolphins for food, oil and used as baits. The commerson dolphin is found around the southern tip of South America around Tierra del Fuego and the Falkland Islands and near the Kerguelen Islands in the southern part of the Indian Ocean. Commerson dolphins are small and distinctive species with mostly black on the head, fin and flipper, mostly white in the other areas of the body. The dorsal fin is small and rounded at the tip and the beak is small or unnoticeable. It typically eats 3.5 to 6kg of food per day. It is a much greater amount than either killer whales or bottle nose dolphins ingest each day. They are fast and highly maneuverable cetaceans regularly swimming at speeds of 11 to 13 kph. They can be found alone or in small groups of 2 to 3 animals. They can also be occasionally spotted in larger groups of 20 to 30 or more dolphins. One of their unique points is that they are the only dolphins which are black and white. (: |
